Studio 4 Art Piece Critique

The essential questions in my class were, "Where have you been as an artist? Where are you going?" I made 3 artistic decisions to answer these questions. My first decision was to stray away from a centered composition. In the past, I had many times unconsciously went for a centered composition. Now as an artist, I am making the decision to change what I've always done and to experiment. My second decision was to have a flat blue background. I wanted the focus of the piece to be on the plant. Previously, I didn't think that much about color choices. Now, I know that the colors an artist uses can change the feeling of an entire piece. My third decision was to have the berries range from green to purple. A green berry is very sour and unrefined, like what I started out as, as an artist. The red berry is the transitional one, a little tart but in the process of refinement. This is where I'm at. A purple berry is at its ripest best form, full of sweet juices. That is where I want to be as an artist. I began with a clean slate and through time and practice, I hope my experiences will help me grow into the best artist I can be.

Wonders about my work:
Are those raspberries and grapes?
These berries are mulberries.

How come the leaves don't have veins?
I didn't have enough time to complete the piece, but it was suppose to have veins.

What type of tree was it?
It was a mulberry tree.

Why is the background blue?
To keep the audience focused on the plant and not on the scenery in the background.

  1. I like how you have the ability to blend colors in any media. It' looks awesome!! I like how your decision making represent where have you been and where are you going. I love the idea of comparing your process to this point with he process of growing berries. Great idea!

  3. Karen, I appreciate that you were so thoughtful in making connections to your artistic journey, your artistic process and your other interests. The metaphor of a ripening berry is fantastic. Thank you for sharing your decisions on composition, color scheme and subject.

I wonder what you would refine given more time, other than adding the veins to the leaves? Do you feel the flat blue background was successful in drawing attention to the foreground?

I thank you for creating and sharing this piece and look forward to seeing your growth this year.
